Dakshin Kannada Fishermen Rally Behind PM Modi’s Initiatives

Fishermen in Dakshin Kannada express strong support for PM Modi, appreciating central schemes like PMMSY ahead of Lok Sabha elections.

The Aryavarth Express
Agency(New Delhi): In Dakshin Kannada, Karnataka, the local fishermen community has vocalized robust support for the Narendra Modi-led government, particularly for initiatives under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMSSY) and other related schemes. This support is highlighted as the fishermen prepare to vote in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Naveen Bangera, Vice President of the Fishing Board Association in Karnataka, detailed the composition and challenges of the fishing communities in the region, including those from various groups like the Mogera and Marakala. The community, which significantly contributes to the local economy, faces issues such as decreased fish catches due to low rainfall and pollution, yet remains optimistic about the promises made by the BJP in its election manifesto.

The fishermen praised the establishment of a dedicated Ministry of Fisheries and the launch of PMSSY, which aims to modernize fishing practices and infrastructure. The scheme provides substantial financial incentives for upgrading boats and equipment, offering up to 60% subsidies for SC/ST and female fishers, and lesser but substantial subsidies for others.

Additionally, the Sagarmala Scheme, which focuses on enhancing port infrastructure, has been beneficial for the state with two new outer harbours. The fishermen believe that the BJP’s manifesto commitments, if fulfilled, would significantly enhance their livelihoods.

The local fishermen also contrasted the central government’s efforts with those of the Congress-led state government, expressing dissatisfaction with the state’s lesser diesel subsidies and inadequate boating facilities.

As the fishermen community, comprising a significant voter base in Dakshin Kannada, navigates these challenges, their continued support for PM Modi signifies approval of his administration’s focus on their sector. This support could be crucial in the upcoming electoral outcomes in the region.
