Controversy Arises from BJP Candidate’s Remark on Mamata Banerjee

BJP's Tamluk candidate, Abhijit Gangopadhyay, stirs controversy with comments on Mamata Banerjee, interpreted as predicting her political downfall by the BJP and wishing harm by the TMC.

The Aryavarth Express
Agency(West Bengal): A controversy has erupted following remarks by Abhijit Gangopadhyay, the BJP nominee for Tamluk and a former justice, which were interpreted by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) as an ill wish against Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal and TMC supremo. In contrast, the BJP clarified that the statement referred to the anticipated political defeat of the TMC.

The incident came to light through a video clip where Gangopadhyay is purportedly heard saying, “It seems the death knell of Mamata Banerjee has already started ringing.” The authenticity of this video remains unverified by PTI.

This statement has prompted criticism from senior TMC leaders, including minister Sashi Panja, who condemned the remark as exceedingly negative, questioning the appropriateness of wishing death upon even one’s adversaries. Panja’s response underscores the political tensions in West Bengal, highlighting the acrimony between the TMC and BJP as they prepare for electoral contests.

Gangopadhyay’s transition from a high court judge to a political figure and BJP candidate has been swift, resigning from his judicial position on March 5 and joining the BJP shortly thereafter. His nomination by the BJP to contest from Tamluk has now become a focal point of political discourse following his controversial comments.

BJP state spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya sought to clarify Gangopadhyay’s remarks, suggesting they were metaphorical, indicating the political end of the TMC’s dominance rather than any personal harm to Banerjee. Bhattacharya also referenced historical political rhetoric used by Banerjee against the CPI(M)-led government to argue that such statements are part of political speech aimed at signalling change rather than literal intent.

The controversy highlights the intense political rivalry in West Bengal, with both sides leveraging statements and counter-statements in the run-up to elections. As the political landscape heats up, the interpretation and implications of such comments remain a subject of significant debate and scrutiny.
