Congress Requests PM Modi's Clarification on Constitution Amendment Claims

Agency(New Delhi): The Congress Party, through General Secretary Jairam Ramesh, has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to publicly declare that his government has no plans to amend the Indian Constitution. This request comes in response to assertions by various BJP leaders suggesting a potential constitutional change should the party secure a substantial majority in the upcoming general elections.

Ramesh’s appeal was made via the social media platform X, coinciding with Modi’s rally in Rajasthan’s Churu, a locale recently spotlighted by the defection of its sitting BJP MP to Congress. The Congress leader highlighted past remarks from BJP figures, including Anant Hegde and Jyoti Mirdha, indicating plans to amend the Constitution if the BJP were to achieve more than 400 seats and control both Houses of Parliament.

Additionally, Ramesh criticized what he perceives as the BJP’s disregard for democratic principles, particularly in the context of free and fair elections. He referenced a video of former BJP MP Santosh Ahlawat from Jhunjhunu, who was reportedly seen coercing government employees to vote for the BJP, questioning how such statements align with democratic values.

The general elections, set to commence on April 19, are organized in seven phases, with Rajasthan voting on April 19 and April 26. The outcome of these elections could significantly influence the political landscape, especially concerning the contentious issue of constitutional amendments.

As the country prepares for these pivotal elections, the Congress’s call for clarification aims to ensure voters are informed about the BJP’s intentions regarding the Constitution, amidst a broader dialogue on the preservation of democratic norms in India.
