Agency (Andhra Pradesh): Amidst political tensions and upcoming elections in Andhra Pradesh, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) President N. Chandrababu Naidu has firmly stated that the 4% reservation for Muslims in the state will remain intact. This declaration comes in response to concerns that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which includes the TDP, BJP, and Jana Sena Party, might repeal these reservations, echoing similar moves proposed in Telangana by the BJP.
During a meeting with Muslim community members in Nellore, Naidu reassured them of the TDP’s commitment to their rights and welfare. He criticized Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy for allegedly spreading misinformation about the NDA’s intentions regarding Muslim reservations.
Naidu also promised financial support for the Muslim community, including Rs 1 lakh for every Muslim undertaking the Haj pilgrimage, should the NDA come to power. He emphasized that previous TDP administrations had consistently supported the Muslim community, by completing significant infrastructure projects like the Gurukula schools and maintaining welfare schemes that were later rescinded by the YSR Congress government.
The former Chief Minister highlighted various accomplishments under his leadership that benefitted the Muslim community, such as the establishment of an Urdu University and the construction of a Haj House in Hyderabad. He contrasted these achievements with Reddy’s record, accusing him of prioritizing personal luxuries over community welfare.
Moreover, Naidu addressed the socio-economic contributions of Muslims in the region, particularly in the auto repair industry, and acknowledged the community’s crucial role in development. He concluded by recalling the TDP’s historical support for the community, including mosque constructions and facilitating direct flights for the Haj pilgrimage, underscoring a stark difference in commitment to minority welfare compared to the current state administration.
