New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday extended his greetings to the personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on the occasion of its 87th Raising Day.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote, “Raising Day wishes to all CRPF personnel. This force has played a vital role in our security apparatus, especially in challenging aspects relating to internal security. CRPF personnel have made a mark for their duty, courage and steadfast commitment in the most testing of situations. Their contribution in overcoming humanitarian challenges is also commendable.”
The CRPF is one of India’s leading central armed police forces, entrusted with the crucial responsibility of maintaining internal security across the nation.
Established originally as the Crown Representatives Police on July 27, 1939, in response to growing political unrest in the princely states, the force has grown into one of the country’s oldest and most respected paramilitary organizations.
Its foundation was significantly shaped by the Madras Resolution of the All India Congress Committee in 1936, which emphasized the need for a strong internal security mechanism.
Following India’s independence, the force underwent a major transformation. It was renamed the Central Reserve Police Force on December 28, 1949, through an Act of Parliament. This legislation not only gave the force its current name but also formalized its role as an armed force under the direct control of the Union government.
India’s first Home Minister, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, played a key role in shaping the CRPF’s future, envisioning it as a versatile force tailored to meet the internal security demands of a newly independent nation.
