Review Overview

New Delhi:
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday extended warm greetings to people across the country on the occasion of Makar Sankranti, Magh Bihu and Pongal, festivals that celebrate the harvest season in different parts of India.

In a letter addressed to citizens, the Prime Minister said the festivals symbolise hope, positivity and renewal. He noted that while Sankranti is celebrated in various forms across the country, it is marked everywhere with the same spirit of enthusiasm and joy. Emphasising its significance for farmers, he said the occasion is a moment to express gratitude to those who nourish the nation through their hard work.

Wishing people on Magh Bihu, PM Modi described the festival as a reflection of Assam’s rich culture and a celebration of joy, warmth and brotherhood. He said the festival marks the completion of the harvest season and inspires feelings of gratitude and contentment. The Prime Minister also acknowledged the contribution of farmers and conveyed his wishes for peace, good health and success for all.

Extending greetings on Pongal, the Prime Minister greeted people with a “Vanakkam” and said the festival highlights the close relationship between humans and nature. He noted that Pongal celebrates agriculture, rural life and the dignity of labour, bringing families together and strengthening social bonds. Calling it a symbol of the richness of Tamil traditions, he added that India takes pride in being home to the Tamil language, one of the oldest in the world.

Magh Bihu, a major harvest festival of Assam, marks the end of the harvesting season in the month of Magh and is celebrated with community feasts. Along with Lohri, Pongal, Sankranti and Uttarayan, it reflects the diverse ways harvest festivals are observed across India.

Lohri, especially celebrated in northern India, is marked by bonfires, traditional foods and folk songs, adding warmth and joy to the festive season.

The Prime Minister is also scheduled to attend Pongal celebrations at the residence of Union Minister L. Murugan in the national capital later today.
