New Delhi [India]: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives in a tragic multi-vehicle accident on the Yamuna Expressway in Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura district and announced financial assistance for the victims from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF).

In a message shared on the official X handle of the Prime Minister’s Office, the Prime Minister said, “The loss of lives due to a mishap on the Yamuna Expressway in Mathura is extremely painful. My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones. I pray for the speedy recovery of those injured.”

The Prime Minister announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh each for the next of kin of those who lost their lives in the accident, while those injured will receive ₹50,000 each from the PMNRF.

The accident occurred early Tuesday morning near Milestone 127, close to the Baldev police station on the Yamuna Expressway. An 11-vehicle collision led to a massive fire, engulfing 10 vehicles. At least 14 fire tenders were deployed, and the blaze was brought under control after several hours. Traffic on the Agra–Noida Expressway was restored following a four-hour rescue operation.

Mathura District Magistrate Chandra Prakash Singh said the death toll in the accident has risen to 13. He added that among the deceased, one was from Prayagraj, one from Gonda and one from Azamgarh, while efforts are underway to identify the remaining victims.

According to officials, around 60 injured persons are undergoing treatment at various hospitals.

Mathura Chief Medical Officer Dr Radha Vallabh said medical teams have been deployed to identify the deceased through DNA sampling, noting that the exact number of bodies is yet to be confirmed. He said post-mortem examinations are underway and the entire medical team has been mobilised.

“There was an accident on the highway involving several buses that collided with each other, following which a fire broke out. Post-mortem examinations are currently being conducted, and two teams are involved. Our entire medical team is fully deployed,” Dr Vallabh said.

He added that all bodies would be identified through DNA samples, clarifying that the total count remains unclear as the official panchnama is yet to be completed.
