Washington [US], April 12: Veteran British actor John Nolan, best known for his roles in the Batman film series and the popular TV show Person of Interest, has passed away at the age of 87. The cause of his death has not been disclosed, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Nolan began his acting career in London and built a strong foundation in theatre, spending two years with the Royal Shakespeare Company. He later joined the National Theatre under renowned director Trevor Nunn, performing in classical productions such as Julius Caesar, The Merry Wives of Windsor, and The Relapse.
He rose to prominence on television with the BBC miniseries Daniel Deronda (1970), where he played the lead role. Around the same time, he also appeared in Doomwatch and the ITV drama Shabby Tiger, further establishing his presence on British television.
In films, Nolan frequently collaborated with his nephew, acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan. He portrayed Wayne Enterprises board member Douglas Fredericks in Batman Begins (2005) and The Dark Knight Rises (2012). His other film credits include Following (1998) and Dunkirk (2017).
International audiences widely recognized him for his role as John Greer in Person of Interest, a series created by another nephew, Jonathan Nolan. Introduced in the second season, his character—a former MI6 agent leading a powerful AI-driven organisation—appeared in 28 episodes until the show concluded in its fifth season.

Born on May 22, 1938, Nolan was the younger brother of Brendan Nolan, father of Christopher and Jonathan Nolan. Over his long career, he also featured in films like Bequest to the Nation (1973) and Terror (1978), along with TV shows such as The Prisoner, The Sweeney, and Silent Witness.
John Nolan is survived by his wife, actress Kim Hartman, their children Miranda and Tom, and grandchildren Dylan and Kara.
