New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday chaired an urgent meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), following his return to the national capital after cutting short his visit to Saudi Arabia. The high-level meeting comes in the wake of the heinous terror attack on tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
The CCS meeting was attended by key ministers, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. The leaders reviewed the security situation and discussed the government’s response to the attack.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, earlier in the day, expressed grief over the tragic loss of innocent lives and reiterated the government’s unwavering stance against terrorism.
“We have a zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism. The perpetrators and those orchestrating such acts from behind the scenes will face a strong and decisive response. The government is committed to taking every necessary measure to ensure justice,” Singh said during an event in New Delhi.
He added, “This cowardly attack has deeply saddened the nation. My heartfelt condolences go out to the families of the victims.”
Singh also held a separate meeting with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, Air Force Chief Marshal A.P. Singh, and senior officials to assess the security landscape in Jammu and Kashmir.
Meanwhile, Home Minister Amit Shah, who visited Srinagar earlier in the day, travelled to the site of the attack in the Baisaran meadow area of Pahalgam. He also chaired a security review meeting to evaluate the ongoing efforts to stabilise the region.
A team from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has joined the Jammu and Kashmir Police at the site to assist in the probe. Security forces have intensified search operations to track down those responsible, while security across the region has been significantly heightened.
