Konaseema (Andhra Pradesh):
A major fire triggered by a gas leak at an Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) well in Andhra Pradesh’s Konaseema region has been raging for more than 24 hours, causing panic among nearby residents, officials said on Tuesday. No casualties have been reported so far.
The incident occurred at the Mori-5 gas well located in Irusumanda village under Malikipuram mandal in Dr B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema district. According to officials, a significant gas pipeline leak was detected at the ONGC installation around 12:40 pm on January 5. The leaking gas soon caught fire, sending up massive flames that were visible from a long distance.
Emergency response teams from ONGC, the fire department and local police were rushed to the spot after residents alerted authorities. Fire officials said coordinated efforts are ongoing to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading further.
“ONGC officials, along with fire and police personnel, are engaged in firefighting operations. Villagers are in a state of panic and fear,” officials said.
As a precautionary measure, residents living near the affected site have been advised to stay away from the area. Authorities have also cordoned off the vicinity of the well to ensure public safety while firefighting and technical operations continue.
Officials confirmed that there have been no deaths or injuries in the incident so far. The situation is being closely monitored, and technical assessments are underway to determine the cause of the gas leak and bring the fire fully under control. Further details are awaited as containment efforts continue.
