Tragic Well Rescue Leads to Five Deaths in Maharashtra

Five individuals died in a failed attempt to rescue a cat from an abandoned well in Ahmednagar, Maharashtra, with toxic gases from animal waste suspected as the cause.

The Aryavarth Express
Agency(Maharashtra): A catastrophic rescue effort in Wadki village, Ahmednagar, Maharashtra resulted in the deaths of five people who attempted to save a cat trapped in an abandoned well. The well, repurposed as a biogas pit, contained animal waste which is believed to have emitted toxic gases.

The sequence of events began when one individual descended into the well to retrieve the cat, only to become trapped himself. This prompted a chain reaction with four others entering the well to aid in the rescue, all of whom succumbed to the hazardous conditions within.

The victims were identified as Manik Govind Kale (65), Sandeep Manik Kale (36), Bablu Anil Kale (28), Anil Bapurao Kale (53), and Babasaheb Gaikwad (36). A sixth individual, Vijay Manik Kale (35), also entered the well with a rope tied around his waist and fortunately survived, albeit with injuries. He was later hospitalized for treatment.

Senior police officer Dhananjay Jadhav of Newasa police station reported that the deceased likely lost consciousness due to the gases released by the decomposing animal waste. The bodies were subsequently recovered by a rescue team.
