Rahul Gandhi Advocates for Caste Census and Economic Mapping to Redefine Reservations

Rahul Gandhi emphasizes the need for a caste census and economic mapping to eliminate the 50% cap on reservations, citing Bihar's survey as evidence of widespread poverty among marginalized communities.

The Aryavarth Express
Agency(New Delhi): Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, during his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’s entry into Gujarat, reinforced his party’s commitment to conducting a caste census if they come to power, merging it with the necessity for economic mapping. This combination, Gandhi argues, is crucial for “uprooting” the current 50% limit on reservations, asserting that an accurate count is the preliminary step towards achieving justice. His statements reflect a concerted effort to understand and address the conditions of poverty in India, particularly among Dalit, tribal, backward, and minority communities, which, according to a caste survey in Bihar, constitute 88% of the state’s impoverished population.

Gandhi’s remarks were made as his yatra traversed through Chhota Udaipur district on its third day in Gujarat, with plans to engage with social workers in Narmada district. The journey, marking its 56th day, aims to cover significant districts like Bharuch, Narmada, and Surat, highlighting the Congress’s agenda for social justice and economic equity.

This initiative underscores Gandhi’s broader critique of the current employment crisis, positioning Congress’s guarantees as beacons of hope for the youth affected by unemployment. He vows to take historical steps through the caste census and economic mapping, which would not only assist in crafting precise policies and programs for the poor but also integrate them into the developmental mainstream. Gandhi’s advocacy for these measures reflects a strategic approach to reshaping India’s reservation system and addressing the root causes of inequality and unemployment.
