Punjab CM Vows Action After Farmer’s Death

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann promises strict action against those responsible for the death of a young farmer during the 'Delhi Chalo' protest.

The Aryavarth Express
Agency (New Delhi): Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann expressed deep sorrow over the death of a young farmer, Subhkaran Singh, at the Punjab-Haryana border. Mann assured that stringent action would be taken against those responsible for the farmer’s death. The incident occurred during the ‘Delhi Chalo’ agitation, where Haryana Police reportedly used tear gas to prevent protesters from crossing the barricades at Shambhu and Khanauri border points.

In his video message, Mann stated that a case would be registered after the postmortem, and officials responsible for the incident would face severe consequences. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also expressed his condolences and emphasized the need for strict punishment for those behind Subhkaran’s death.

Mann highlighted that while law and order are under control, the Haryana Police’s actions had disturbed the peace. He questioned the rationale behind preventing farmers from peacefully reaching the national capital to voice their demands. Mann suggested that the Haryana government should not have stopped the farmers, allowing them to proceed to Delhi for a peaceful protest.

The Punjab Chief Minister criticized the BJP-led Central government, questioning its inaction regarding the farmers’ demands since January 22, 2021. He opined that had there been proper dialogue over the past three years, such a situation could have been avoided.

The ‘Delhi Chalo’ agitation, led by farmer leaders, resumed on Wednesday morning after rejecting a proposal from the Central government in the fourth round of talks. Union Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda, involved in the negotiations with farmer leaders, called for further talks and appealed for peace.

This incident underscores the ongoing tensions and challenges in addressing the grievances of the farming community in India, highlighting the need for effective dialogue and peaceful resolutions to such conflicts.
