Priyanka Gandhi emerges as a powerful campaigner for Congress in the 2024 elections, countering Modi's influence and significantly impacting the party's performance.

Agency (New Delhi): Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has become a formidable force for the Congress, effectively countering Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s jibes with her own sharp retorts. Highlighting her family’s sacrifices and patriotism, she drew large crowds and became the Congress’s key mobilizer in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Political commentator Rasheed Kidwai noted that Priyanka Gandhi emerged as a revelation, proving that Modi could be countered effectively. Her role in the Congress’s unexpectedly strong performance was pivotal, establishing her as the party’s talisman. Sanjay Jha, a former Congress leader, praised her as an outstanding campaigner whose sharp rebuttals to Modi’s remarks were highly effective.

After the elections, Priyanka expressed her pride in Uttar Pradesh, appreciating the wisdom shown by its people. Despite the INDIA bloc potentially falling short of forming the government, the Congress’s performance was notable, leading in 98 seats, nearly double from the last election. Priyanka Gandhi’s impactful campaign was central to this achievement, producing many memorable moments.

One such moment was her emotional response in Bengaluru to Modi’s “gold and mangalsutra” comments, where she emphasized her mother Sonia Gandhi’s sacrifices for the country. Priyanka’s decision to not contest the elections but to campaign tirelessly for her party, especially in Rae Bareli and Amethi, where her brother Rahul Gandhi contested, was strategic.

Rahul Gandhi secured a significant victory in Rae Bareli by 3.9 lakh votes, and Kishori Lal Sharma defeated Smriti Irani in Amethi by over 1.67 lakh votes. Much of this success is credited to Priyanka’s dedicated efforts, staying in these constituencies for two weeks and serving as a non-playing captain, always present and engaged.

Her campaign style was personal and relatable, discussing her childhood, her father Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination, and her mother’s grief. Priyanka adeptly balanced striking a familial chord with addressing national issues. She participated in 108 public meetings and roadshows, gave over 100 media bites, and conducted multiple interviews during her extensive campaign across 16 states and one union territory.

At a workers’ meeting in Amethi, Priyanka shared an inspiring story of a woman who funded her daughter’s education despite opposition from her father-in-law, illustrating Priyanka’s ability to connect on a personal level. Her speeches often felt like conversations, making her relatable to the audience.

Priyanka’s speeches frequently emphasized accountability and urged voters to prioritize issues like employment and daily life improvements over divisive religious and caste-based politics. Looking ahead, her role in the Congress is expected to grow, with many anticipating her eventual electoral debut and a more significant organizational role within the party.
