Agency( Gujarat): On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed the central government’s commitment to honoring and preserving India’s rich historical heritage through the restoration of Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. “The restoration of Sabarmati Ashram manifests our commitment to preserving and celebrating our rich history. The scale of the effort will leave you spellbound!” exclaimed PM Modi, sharing his enthusiasm on X.

The day was marked by PM Modi inaugurating the redeveloped Kochrab Ashram and introducing the Master Plan for the Gandhi Ashram Memorial at the Mahatma Gandhi Ashram, Sabarmati. These initiatives are part of a broader effort to perpetuate the ideals and teachings of Mahatma Gandhi, making them accessible and relevant to both current and future generations.

Kochrab Ashram, established by Mahatma Gandhi in 1915 upon his return from South Africa, serves not only as a piece of historical preservation but also as a vibrant center for visitors and scholars alike. Managed by Gujarat Vidyapeeth, it stands as a testament to Gandhi’s enduring legacy.

The ambitious Gandhi Ashram Memorial Project aims to expand the existing Ashram from its current 5-acre footprint to a sprawling 55-acre campus. This expansion includes the restoration of 36 buildings, with 20, including Gandhi’s own residence ‘Hriday Kunj’, earmarked for conservation. Thirteen buildings will see restoration, and three will be meticulously reproduced to maintain the historical integrity of the site.

In addition to the architectural rejuvenation, the project foresees the establishment of a library and archives building, aimed at preserving and disseminating Gandhi’s teachings. The envisioned facilities are designed to support scholarly research and engage visitors with interactive workshops on charkha spinning, handmade paper-making, cotton weaving, and leatherwork. The expansion also plans for new buildings to accommodate administrative and visitor services, including an orientation center and public utilities, all while offering interactive exhibits that celebrate Gandhiji’s life and the Ashram’s historical significance.
