Jairam Ramesh Accuses PM Modi of Neglecting Manipur Crisis

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh criticizes Prime Minister Modi for his lack of action on the ongoing crisis in Manipur, questioning the government's commitment to the state's stability and democratic processes.

The Aryavarth Express
Agency(New Delhi): Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of abandoning Manipur amidst its escalating crisis. Labeling the situation a “BJP-manufactured crisis,” Ramesh contrasts Modi’s international claims of peace facilitation with his inaction at home.

Ramesh pointed out that despite the violent conflicts in Manipur, which erupted on May 3, 2023, resulting in over 200 deaths, displacement of more than 60,000 people, and theft of thousands of weapons, Prime Minister Modi has not visited the state. He criticized Modi for not addressing what he describes as a “civil war” situation, which has even been acknowledged by the Supreme Court as an “absolute breakdown of Constitutional machinery.”

The Congress leader also highlighted Rahul Gandhi’s proactive efforts, noting Gandhi’s two visits to the state, which he suggests depict a stark contrast to Modi’s indifference or possible cowardice. Ramesh’s critique extended to the global stage, questioning Modi’s self-styled image as a ‘Vishwaguru’ (world leader) and his effectiveness in crisis management both domestically and internationally.

Furthermore, Ramesh called attention to the upcoming elections, stressing the importance of protecting democratic processes in Manipur, particularly in light of the recent boycotts by Kuki youth and women. He also challenged the constitutional validity of BJP Rajya Sabha MP Sanajaoba Leishemba using the title ‘Maharaja of Manipur’, urging PM Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to clarify their stance on this issue.

As Manipur prepares for the polls on April 19, 2024, in the first phase of the Lok Sabha elections, the spotlight on the state’s stability and democratic integrity continues to intensify.
