Agency(Uttar Pradesh): In an unexpected twist in the lead-up to the Lok Sabha elections, Rampur and Moradabad constituencies in Uttar Pradesh found themselves entangled in confusion. This occurred when two individuals, claiming to be the legitimate Samajwadi Party (SP) candidates, submitted their nomination papers for the same seats. The incident, unfolding on Wednesday, has stirred a mix of speculation and uncertainty regarding the official party endorsements.

In the historical city of Rampur, Asim Raja, known for his previous run in the 2022 Lok Sabha byelection under the SP banner, stepped forward to declare himself the party’s choice. On the same day, Mohibulla Nadvi, a prominent imam from a Delhi mosque, presented his candidacy, equally asserting his official endorsement by the party and its leader, Akhilesh Yadav. The situation mirrored itself in Moradabad, where Ruchi Veera, an SP leader, submitted her candidacy papers shortly after S T Hasan, the incumbent MP, did the same, both claiming the party’s backing.

Despite the claims and counterclaims from these aspirants, the Samajwadi Party’s leadership maintained silence over the issue, not offering any immediate clarification. This silence added layers to the intrigue, leaving room for speculation about the party’s internal processes and decision-making. SP spokesperson Farhrul Hasan Chand remarked on the party’s democratic nature, suggesting a resolution would emerge, indicating the party’s ultimate decision on its candidates would be unveiled soon.

The timing of these events is critical, as both Rampur and Moradabad are slated for election in the first phase on April 19. With the deadline for nominations closing on Wednesday, the ambiguity around the official candidates has added an element of drama to the election proceedings. This development is poised to test the organizational resolve and clarity of the Samajwadi Party as it navigates through these unforeseen electoral challenges.
