Congress Demands Special Session on Farm Issues

Congress urges a special Parliament session to address farmers' concerns, following clashes at the Punjab-Haryana border and a farmer's death.

Agency(New Delhi): The Congress party intensified its critique against the BJP-led central government on Thursday, calling for a special session of Parliament to address urgent farmer issues. This demand comes in the wake of recent farmer protests and a violent clash at the Punjab-Haryana border.

Additionally, the Congress has requested the Punjab government to hold a similar session in the state assembly to discuss these critical matters. The urgency of this demand was underscored by an unfortunate incident at Khanauri, located on the Punjab-Haryana border, where a farmer lost his life, and approximately 12 police officers were injured during a confrontation on Wednesday. The conflict erupted as protesting farmers attempted to cross barricades.

The deceased farmer, identified as 21-year-old Subhkaran Singh from Bathinda district, met his end at Khanauri on the Sangrur-Jind border. Reflecting on this incident, Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh, in a Hindi post on X, emphasized the significant role of farmers in India’s agricultural progress, including the green and white revolutions. He credited the nation’s agricultural self-reliance to the farmers’ efforts.

Ramesh criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s approach towards the farmers’ demand for a Minimum Support Price (MSP) guarantee, describing the government’s response as a ‘guarantee of bullet’, highlighting the use of tear gas and firing as extreme measures of injustice against the farmers. He drew parallels with the treatment of the youth, citing their demands for employment being met with force and the controversial Agnipath scheme as detrimental to their future.

Concluding his statement, Ramesh asserted that the Congress is dedicated to ending a decade-long period of injustice. He pledged that the party would strive to ensure justice for farmers and youth, as these are central to its agenda of providing ‘five justices’, with a focus on ‘farmer justice’ and ‘youth justice’.
