New Delhi, April 13: Congress MP Manickam Tagore raised concerns over the Centre’s timeline for implementing the Women’s Reservation Bill, alleging that the sequence of key processes is being altered for political reasons.
Ahead of a special Parliament session, Tagore said the established order—Census, delimitation, and then reservation—is being reversed. Referring to the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, he noted that the law mandates implementation only after Census and delimitation are completed.
He questioned the push for delimitation before the proposed 2027 Census, which is expected to include OBC caste enumeration, arguing that it could significantly impact representation. Tagore alleged the move could be politically motivated and reiterated that the core issue is social justice and fair representation.
Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh also criticised the Centre, accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of inconsistency on the issue. The Congress has further demanded a sub-quota for OBC women within the proposed reservation framework.
