The Aryavarth Express New Delhi: Lok Sabha proceedings on Monday were repeatedly disrupted as Opposition MPs demanded a discussion on the India-US interim trade framework, leading to an adjournment until 2 PM. For the second consecutive instance, less than ten minutes of the session were completed without any legislative discussion.
The disruptions come amid plans by Opposition parties to move a no-confidence motion against Speaker Om Birla in the second half of the Budget Session. The motion, which requires a 20-day notice period, cites grievances including the suspension of eight Opposition MPs, alleged preferential treatment for treasury bench members, and restrictions on the Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi from speaking in the House.
After Union Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary moved a motion to discuss the Union Budget, Opposition MPs pressed to discuss the India-US trade deal instead. Krishna Prasad Tenneti, chairing the proceedings, said business matters had been decided and the Opposition had already nominated Shashi Tharoor to speak on the Budget.
Tharoor offered to yield his floor time to the LoP, saying, “Sir, we will speak on the trade deal,” while Rahul Gandhi reminded the Chair that he had been assured he would be allowed to speak before the Budget discussion. Opposition MPs repeatedly shouted “no,” demanding that Gandhi be allowed to address the trade framework.
As the chair attempted to calm the House, Speaker Om Birla adjourned proceedings until 12 noon, with question hour already disrupted since the start of the session at 11 AM. No legislative business was conducted on Monday.
Before the question hour began, Speaker Birla congratulated the Indian Under-19 cricket team for their historic World Cup win.
