This voyage, organized by the Indian Naval Sailing Association (INSA), is celebrated as the first transoceanic expedition by Indian women in a double-handed format, marking a historic milestone in naval ocean sailing.

The expedition features Lieutenant Commanders Dilna K and Roopa A at the helm, embodying the power and spirit of “Nari Shakti” in the maritime sector. Their journey on the INSV Tarini underscores the exceptional prowess and commitment of the Indian Navy’s female personnel and highlights India’s dedication to fostering gender equality and inclusivity in spheres traditionally dominated by men.

This voyage is pivotal for the officers as it is part of their comprehensive preparation for a global circumnavigation set to begin later in the year. After a thorough selection and training phase spanning over two years, Lt Cdr Dilna K and Lt Cdr Roopa A have previously completed significant journeys, including a round trip from Goa to Mauritius in 2022 and an expedition from Goa to Rio De Janeiro via Cape Town. Most recently, they undertook a voyage from Goa to Port Blair and back in a double-handed mode. This current mission serves as their final preparatory expedition before embarking on their circumnavigation attempt in September.

The expedition was inaugurated by the renowned yachtsman, Commander Abhilash Tomy (Retd), KC, NM, who has himself completed two non-stop global circumnavigations by sail. Over the past six months, he has been closely mentoring the duo, expressing immense pride in their undertaking. He commended the expedition as a reflection of the adventurous spirit and resilience that characterize the Indian Navy, voicing his full confidence in the officers’ capabilities and wishing them favorable winds and smooth sailing.

The INSV Tarini’s journey to Mauritius is a significant leap forward in India’s maritime initiatives, showcasing the nation’s ascending role in global maritime affairs and its commitment to gender equality on the high seas. This expedition evidences the Indian Navy’s pledge to excellence and diversity, anticipated to arrive in Port Louis, Mauritius, on March 20, 2024.
