Jalandhar (Punjab): Celebrated marathon runner Fauja Singh, widely known as the ‘Turbaned Tornado’, passed away at the age of 114 following a tragic road accident near Beas city in Punjab’s Jalandhar district. Authorities have registered a case under relevant legal sections, officials confirmed.
Speaking to the media, Thana Incharge HP Preet Singh stated that CCTV footage from the accident site is being thoroughly reviewed. “We received information about the unfortunate demise of Fauja Singh. We reached the hospital and have registered a case under the relevant sections. The accident occurred on the main road near Beas. We are ananalysingearby CCTV cameras,” he said.
An Icon Remembered
Fauja Singh’s passing has triggered an outpouring of grief and tributes across the country and the global sporting community. Admired for his remarkable endurance and ageless spirit, Singh became a symbol of perseverance and resilience, completing marathons around the world well past the age of 100.

Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria expressed deep sorrow, calling Singh a beacon of strength and positivity.
“Even at 114, Sardar Fauja Singh Ji inspired generations with his unmatched energy and commitment. I had the honour of walking with him during the ‘Nasha Mukt – Rangla Punjab’ march from Beas in December 2024. His presence elevated the spirit of the movement,” he said, adding that Singh’s legacy will continue to inspire the fight for a healthier and drug-free Punjab.
Former Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh took to X to share his condolences, writing:
“Deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Fauja Singh Ji, the legendary marathon runner. His extraordinary life and unwavering spirit will continue to inspire generations.”
Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Daljit S Cheema also paid tribute, calling Singh a “global icon of endurance” and a reminder that “age is no barrier”.
A Record-Breaking Life
Born in 1911, Fauja Singh took up marathon running at the age of 89, debuting at the London Marathon in 2000. He went on to run marathons in Toronto, New York, and several other cities, setting numerous records in age-group categories and becoming an international symbol of senior athleticism.
Known affectionately as the ‘Sikh Superman’, his athletic achievements and life story inspired not only runners but people of all ages across the globe.
His legacy, both on and off the track, is set to live on as a testament to the power of determination, resilience, and the human spirit.
