The Aryavarth Express
Agency (New Delhi): The Supreme Court has granted bail to AAP leader Sanjay Singh in a money laundering case linked to Delhi excise policy irregularities, following the Enforcement Directorate’s decision not to contest his bail plea. A bench led by Justice Sanjiv Khanna directed Sanjay Singh’s release on bail for the duration of the trial.

The Enforcement Directorate informed the Supreme Court that it has no objection to Sanjay Singh being granted bail. The decision came after the court inquired whether the agency required further custody of Sanjay Singh in the excise policy case.

Observing that Sanjay Singh had already spent six months in jail, the Supreme Court stipulated that his release would be subject to conditions set by the trial court. It emphasized that this concession should not serve as precedent and allowed Sanjay Singh to continue his political activities.

Simultaneously, the court disposed of another plea filed by Sanjay Singh challenging his arrest and remand in the case, deeming it irrelevant.

Sanjay Singh had approached the Supreme Court against the Delhi High Court’s denial of bail in the excise policy irregularities case. In his bail plea, he contested the High Court’s decision, citing lack of criminal wrongdoing and violation of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

Sanjay Singh was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on October 4, 2023, in connection with the case. The agency alleged his involvement in creating a special purpose vehicle to launder proceeds of crime linked to policy changes, as per the ED’s statement. Sanjay Singh has consistently denied these charges.
