The Aryavarth Express Pallekele (Sri Lanka): England star batter Jos Buttler made history on Sunday, becoming the fourth-highest run-scorer in T20 Internationals and the most capped player in England’s cricket history. The milestone came during the second match of the three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka, which also marked Buttler’s 402nd international appearance for the Three Lions.
Jos Buttler scored 39 runs off 29 balls as England secured a six-wicket victory over Sri Lanka, taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series. With 3,925 runs in 146 T20Is at an average of 35.36, Buttler has now surpassed all English players, including former captain Eoin Morgan, to become England’s highest-ever T20I run-scorer. Globally, he sits behind Pakistan’s Babar Azam (4,505 runs), India’s Rohit Sharma (4,231 runs), and Virat Kohli (4,188 runs) on the all-time T20I runs list.
At 35, Buttler also eclipsed legendary fast bowler James Anderson to become England’s most capped international player, surpassing Anderson’s 401 matches. Across formats, Buttler has amassed 12,308 runs for England in 402 matches, including 2,907 runs in 57 Tests with two centuries and 18 fifties, and 5,515 runs in 199 ODIs with 11 centuries and 29 half-centuries.
The wicketkeeper-batter, a two-time ICC Championship winner, is set to feature in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 starting February 7 in India and Sri Lanka. England’s squad, led by star batter Harry Brook as captain, will begin their campaign against Nepal on February 8.
