Rajouri (Jammu and Kashmir): The remote hilly regions of the Kalakote sub-division in Rajouri district are witnessing steady transformation as basic facilities and government support reach far-flung areas through various Centrally Sponsored Schemes. Once deprived of essential amenities, residents say they are now experiencing improved infrastructure, livelihood opportunities, and welfare benefits.
Locals recall struggling for years due to the absence of basic services, with several panchayats lacking infrastructure that made everyday life difficult. However, ongoing development work has brought noticeable change. People are now receiving employment opportunities at their doorstep and observing significant improvements in their living standards.
A major boost has come from the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), which has enabled many families living in kachha houses to move into pucca homes. Beneficiary Babli Devi shared, “We used to have a mud house. Now, PM Modi gave us this house. Homes will be built for many other residents too—their names have been submitted. There used to be a lot of problems. Now, water is available to every home, and PM Modi gives farmers money in instalments, just like other schemes for farmers. We also get fertilisers and seeds.”
Residents say the new permanent homes have brought comfort, dignity, and a sense of security.
Alongside housing, employment is being consistently generated through the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). Gram Rozgar Sevak Parveen Singh explained, “We are carrying out MGNREGA (Capex) and PMAY projects, and we’ve completed most of the PMAY work. Earlier, people faced a lot of difficulties in mud houses. The government’s PMAY scheme has benefited many people. We are busy day and night serving the public.”
Additionally, schemes like PM-KISAN, pension benefits, and various rural development initiatives are now reaching every eligible household. Farmers and labourers say that with financial support, infrastructure improvements, and access to basic amenities, their overall quality of life has significantly improved.
