The Aryavarth Express:
Mullanpur (Punjab) [India], April 1 : Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined ₹12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate during his team’s IPL 2026 clash against Gujarat Titans at the New International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, Punjab.
According to an official statement from the Indian Premier League, Iyer became the first captain this season to be penalised under Article 2.22 of the league’s Code of Conduct, which deals with minimum over-rate violations. As it was the team’s first offence of the season, a fine of ₹12 lakh was imposed.
Despite the penalty, Punjab Kings began their campaign on a winning note with a tense three-wicket victory over Gujarat Titans. Chasing a target of 162, debutant Cooper Connolly starred with an unbeaten 72 off 44 balls, guiding the team home in 19.1 overs and earning the Player of the Match award.
Earlier in the innings, Prasidh Krishna delivered an impressive spell of 3/29, triggering a middle-order collapse for Punjab from 110/2 to 118/6. However, Connolly’s composure under pressure ensured the team secured victory with five balls to spare.
Speaking after the match, Iyer highlighted the importance of staying calm during difficult phases, especially after a brief collapse following his dismissal. He also praised Connolly’s mindset and shot-making ability, expressing confidence in the youngster’s future performances.
Punjab Kings will next face Chennai Super Kings at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on April 3. Chennai, meanwhile, are looking to bounce back after an eight-wicket loss to Rajasthan Royals in their opening match.
