New Delhi: In a prompt and effective rescue operation, the Indian Navy’s stealth frigate INS Tabar came to the aid of the Panamanian-flagged tanker MT Yi Cheng 6, which suffered a major fire in its engine room while transiting through the Gulf of Oman on June 29.
The vessel, en route from Kandla, India, to Shinas, Oman, was carrying 14 Indian crew members when it experienced a complete power failure due to the fire.
Responding to the distress call, INS Tabar, which was deployed on a mission in the region, swiftly dispatched a firefighting team and equipment to the stricken vessel using its ship’s boat and helicopter.
According to a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) by the Indian Navy spokesperson, 13 naval personnel along with 5 crew members of MT Yi Cheng 6 actively engaged in firefighting efforts. The statement confirmed that the intensity of the blaze had been significantly reduced.
This rescue comes just weeks after another successful maritime operation. On June 14, the Indian Coast Guard, in coordination with the Indian Navy and Air Force, completed a major firefighting and salvage mission involving the Singaporean container vessel MV Wan Hai 503. The distressed ship was handed over to the tug Offshore Warrior on June 13, underscoring India’s growing capability and readiness in ensuring maritime safety in regional waters.
