Agency (New Delhi): In a recent meeting chaired by Shri R. K. Singh, Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy, mechanisms were finalized for the deployment of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to ensure continuous renewable energy supply. The meeting, held in New Delhi on February 22, 2024, aimed at structuring the scheme for Viability Gap Funding (VGF) to develop BESS with a capacity of 4,000 Megawatt-hours (MWh). Key officials from relevant ministries and organizations attended the session.
Minister Singh emphasized the need to build sufficient BESS capacity to meet the growing demand for power and facilitate the energy transition. He highlighted the potential wastage of excess solar and wind energy if not stored efficiently, underscoring the importance of deploying storage systems to utilize it effectively.
The discussion revolved around ensuring BESS’s capability to supply electricity during peak demand periods while stabilizing the grid. Charging the BESS primarily from renewable sources during surplus solar and wind energy availability was also emphasized.
Several procurement models for BESS, including energy and capacity contracts, were deliberated upon, along with their associated challenges. Potential locations in renewable energy-rich states were identified to maximize the storage system’s benefits.
The meeting outcomes reflect a significant step towards enhancing renewable energy utilization and grid stability in India. Additionally, the development of BESS is expected to contribute to carbon emissions reduction and foster sustainable energy practices.
