Union Minister Athawale Advocates for Uniform Civil Code, Citing Ambedkar’s Support

Union Minister Ramdas Athawale asserted the need for a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), citing Ambedkar's support and dismissing fears of tribal and Muslim communities.

New Delhi (Agency): In a recent press conference, Union minister Ramdas Athawale made a vigorous case for the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), citing the venerated Dr. B R Ambedkar’s endorsement of the legislative measure. He stressed that the UCC’s implementation is not only consistent with Ambedkar’s vision but is also integral to fostering religious harmony in the country.

The minister refuted opposition propaganda, led primarily by the Congress party, alleging the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) intended to alter the constitution. “This is false propaganda being spread by the Opposition. The UCC is needed to ensure unity and harmony between Hindus and Muslims. Even B R Ambedkar, the architect of our Constitution, was in favour of UCC,” Athawale declared, leveraging his credibility as a respected Dalit leader from Maharashtra.

He extended reassurances to Muslim and tribal communities, asserting the UCC is not designed to undermine their rights or interests. He further implored political factions to rally behind the UCC instead of politicizing the issue.

In June, the Law Commission encouraged public feedback on the UCC, a matter that has long ignited contentious debates. Alongside his strong endorsement for the UCC, Athawale also refuted the notion that Prime Minister Narendra Modi harbors anti-Muslim or anti-Dalit sentiments.

Athawale was in Ahmedabad for discussions with Gujarat government officials about the progress of schemes designed to uplift Dalits and other marginalized communities. He expressed confidence in the National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) prospects for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, predicting an unequivocal victory for Modi in his bid for a third consecutive term as Prime Minister.

He dismissed the likelihood of Rahul Gandhi assuming the prime ministerial role, advising the Congress leader against politicizing every issue.

When questioned about the potential unity among opposition parties, Athawale queried the leadership succession, citing the profusion of prime ministerial hopefuls within their ranks. He reaffirmed his party’s unwavering support for Modi as their sole candidate.

Confronted with the continued occurrences of atrocities against Dalits in Gujarat, Athawale acknowledged these incidents, though noting an improvement in the situation and increased support from the general caste category towards Dalits. He urged collective efforts to eradicate the caste system. As a testament to societal progress, Athawale revealed an increase in inter-caste marriages in Gujarat over the past two years.
