Sanjay Kumar Jain Appointed CMD of IRCTC

IRTS officer Sanjay Kumar Jain takes charge as the new Chairman & Managing Director of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd (IRCTC).

Agency (New Delhi): Mr. Sanjay Kumar Jain, an Indian Railway Traffic Services (IRTS) Officer of the 1990 batch, has assumed the position of Chairman & Managing Director of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd (IRCTC) today. Mr. Jain, a Chartered Accountant by qualification, boasts over three decades of diverse experience in leadership roles across policy making, commercial, and developmental ventures in the Government of India and Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).

His career highlights include significant contributions in various capacities within the Ministry of Railways, PSUs, and the Department of Public Enterprises, Ministry of Finance, Government of India. Notably, he has served as the Principal Chief Commercial Manager of Northern Railway, Group General Manager (North Zone) at IRCTC, Divisional Railway Manager at Mumbai Central Railway, and Joint Secretary in the Department of Public Enterprises. He also held positions as the Part-time Chairman & CEO of National Land Monetization Corporation Limited.

During his tenure as Group General Manager (North Zone) at IRCTC, Mr. Jain played a pivotal role in revitalizing the luxury train Maharajas’ Express through innovative marketing strategies. He spearheaded the launch of India’s first ‘Executive Lounge’ at New Delhi Railway Station and developed a financial and operational model for ‘Jan Ahar – New Delhi’, which was subsequently replicated across IRCTC. Under his leadership, the tourism business of IRCTC in the North Zone saw a remarkable growth of 35 times over five years.

As Divisional Railway Manager of Mumbai, Mr. Jain led a large workforce and efficiently managed the largest Suburban Railway Network, serving around 40 lakh commuters daily. His initiatives significantly contributed to the success of the Swachhata Mission, earning the Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) the “Best Iconic Swachhata Place Award’ by the Jal Shakti Ministry. He initiated the heritage conservation of Mumbai Byculla Railway Station in 2019, which won UNESCO’s Asia Pacific Cultural Heritage Award for cultural heritage conservation in 2023. Mr. Jain also promoted women empowerment by operationalizing the first all-women run railway station at Matunga, Mumbai, earning recognition in The Limca Book of Records.

His efforts to improve environmental sustainability and passenger amenities have been widely acknowledged. Mr. Jain has been honored twice with the highest award in Indian Railways – the Minister of Railways award for his meritorious services – in 1999 and 2019.

Mr. Jain’s career reflects his versatile leadership, technical expertise, and commitment to developing and enhancing the efficiency of the railway system.
