PM Modi Set to Deliver 10th Independence Day Address Ahead of 2024 Elections

Eyes on Modi's anticipated messages before the next national polls.

New Delhi (Agency): Prime Minister Narendra Modi is preparing to give his 10th straight Independence Day speech. This address will be his last before India’s 2024 national elections, making it a notable occasion. Over the years, these speeches have been platforms for PM Modi to discuss achievements, plans, and his vision for India’s future.

Observers note that PM Modi might recap India’s progress in different areas since he came into power in 2014. They also expect him to lay out his plans for the upcoming years, a pattern seen in his past speeches.

During such events, many look for hidden political messages. While Modi has avoided direct criticism of opposing parties in his Independence Day talks, he often mentions the positive changes his government has introduced. He contrasts these with previous periods marked by “corruption” and a lack of clear policy direction.

In the past, a major theme of Modi’s addresses has been India’s growing global significance. He speaks of a new determination driving India’s development and the increased confidence of its people. His speeches underline India’s commitment to strong security and foreign policies that focus only on the nation’s benefit.

PM Modi’s first Independence Day speech in 2014 was memorable. From the historic Red Fort, he introduced new programs, such as Swachh Bharat (Clean India) and Jan Dhan accounts. These programs aimed to tackle issues like public cleanliness and financial inclusion. He has consistently addressed a range of topics, from societal challenges like crimes against women to internal disputes.

In 2022, PM Modi centered his speech on the ‘Panch Pran’ (five pledges). He urged Indians to:
1. Strive to make India a developed nation by 2047.
2. Eliminate all remnants of colonial thinking.
3. Take pride in India’s rich heritage.
4. Foster unity and strength.
5. Honestly fulfill citizen responsibilities.

PM Modi has often discussed grassroots initiatives in his speeches. One example is the government’s effort to build toilets for impoverished families, aiming to stop open defecation. Although some critics mock these “smaller” issues, Modi has always presented them alongside grander national plans. These bigger plans include the Gati Shakti project for infrastructure, national electrification, and modernizing India’s defense forces.

Based on his past addresses, some expect new scheme announcements. In the lead-up to the 2019 national elections, Modi revealed Ayushman Bharat, a bold health insurance plan for the poor. Additionally, he has announced significant policy changes during his August 15th speeches. This includes introducing the Chief of Defence Staff position in 2019 and unveiling the Gati Shakti plan during the 2021 Amrit Mahotsav of independence celebration.

With the upcoming 2024 elections, many will be keenly listening to PM Modi’s words, looking for clues about his government’s next moves and its vision for India’s future.
