Reflecting the vision of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s government to leverage ‘Nari Shakti’ in various domains, three remarkable officers represented the Indian Armed Forces at the event, highlighting their extraordinary journeys and roles in modern warfare.

Squadron Leader Bhawana Kanth, a trailblazer in the Indian Air Force, participated as a panellist in the seminar ‘International Women in Defence – Investing in an Inclusive Future’. Hosted by Saudi Ambassador to the United States, Princess Reema bint Bandar Al-Saud, Kanth shared her experiences as a fighter pilot, discussing leadership and resilience. She holds the distinction of being the first woman fighter pilot to participate in the Republic Day Parade in 2021 and again in the 2024 Flypast.

Colonel Ponung Doming from the Indian Army, another key participant, holds the significant achievement of being the first woman officer to command a Border Task Force situated above 15,000 feet in the Northern sector. With over two decades of service, including many challenging assignments as an Engineering officer, she has set multiple records in her career.

Lieutenant Commander Annu Prakash, representing the Indian Navy, shared her expertise in maritime security and operations. Her participation emphasized the vital role women play in protecting India’s extensive coastline and contributing to regional stability.

These three officers will continue their mission to inspire the next generation by speaking to around 600 school children at the International Indian School in Riyadh on February 08, 2024. Their talks are expected to showcase the diverse talents and leadership skills of Indian women in uniform, encouraging young minds to pursue their ambitions.

The WDS 2024, which commenced on February 04 and will conclude on February 08, saw Raksha Rajya Mantri Shri Ajay Bhatt leading the Indian delegation. The presence of these women officers at such a prestigious international event not only underscores the growing role of women in India’s defence sector but also strengthens the country’s image as a nation committed to gender equality and empowerment in all fields.
