Indian-Origin Man in Singapore Charged with Assault Using Dangerous Weapon

Michael Nganasekaran, a 39-year-old Indian-origin man in Singapore, faces charges for allegedly attacking another man with a knife. If found guilty, he could face up to seven years in jail, a fine, or caning.

An Indian-origin man in Singapore has been charged with assault involving a dangerous weapon, according to local police. Michael Nganasekaran, 39, allegedly attacked Shanmugam Vegatachalam, 40, with a knife on Hindoo Road last Saturday. The incident resulted in Vegatachalam receiving a 2 cm cut on his left shoulder.

If Michael is found guilty in court, the consequences could be severe. He may be fined, jailed for up to seven years, or caned. He could also face a combination of these punishments.

Police disclosed that Michael was arrested within eight hours of the reported incident. Officers were able to identify him quickly due to ground inquiries and surveillance camera footage. “Preliminary investigations showed that Michael was believed to be involved in a dispute with Vegatachalam and used a knife to attack him,” a press release from the police stated.

The case moved to court this Monday, where Michael spoke through a Tamil interpreter. He stated that he did not intend to harm the victim, and he also had a knife in his possession at the time. Michael added that he himself was injured during the encounter. He further told the court that there was a third individual involved, who was also armed with a knife.

After hearing Michael’s statement, the court decided to keep him in custody for further investigation. He is scheduled to appear in court again next Monday.

This case brings attention to the issue of violent assaults and the use of dangerous weapons. It also highlights the role of quick police action and the importance of video surveillance in solving crimes. As both the accused and the victim are of Indian origin, the case could receive significant attention both in Singapore and India.
