India Observes 14 August as ‘Partition Horrors Remembrance Day’

New Delhi (Agency): India marks the ‘Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas’ (Partition Horrors Remembrance Day) today. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in remembrance, highlighted the many innocent lives lost due to the nation’s partition. Shri Modi expressed, “This day serves to respectfully remember those who lost their lives during the country’s division. It also reminds us of the pain and struggles of people who were forced from their homes.”

Shri Hardeep S. Puri, the Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs and Petroleum and Natural Gas, honored 75 prominent individuals who faced the partition’s tragedies. The commemoration was organized by the Ministry of Culture. Puri pointed out that the purpose of this day is to ensure future generations remember the immense pain of those times. He mentioned the “hate and violence” during the partition that led to millions losing their homes and lives.

Furthermore, the Minister shared a personal connection to this tragedy. He revealed, “Wrong policies of those in charge led to the partition of India. My parents were victims of this terrible event. Born in 1952, I grew up hearing stories of how my father escaped danger and boarded the last Frontier Mail from Lahore. My family and many others had to start their lives over.”

To shed light on the calamities of partition, Shri Hardeep S. Puri inaugurated an exhibition named ‘Horrors of Partition’. Sh. Rakesh Sinha, a Member of Parliament, was also present. This event, aiming to educate and remind people about the events of 1947, was a collaborative effort by the Partition Museum, IGNCA, and the Ministry of Culture of the Indian government.

The memory of partition remains a sensitive topic in India. The aim of observing ‘Partition Horrors Remembrance Day’ is not only to remember the tragedies but also to promote peace, harmony, and strengthen the country’s secular foundation.
