Ex-Environment Minister Slams Government Over Cheetah Deaths

New Delhi (Agency):Former environment minister Jairam Ramesh criticized the Indian government on Wednesday over the recent death of a cheetah in Kuno National Park. He stated that such tragedies occur when “science and transparency take a backseat”.

The death of the cheetah is the ninth such incident at the park since March. The deceased cheetah, a female named Dhatri (Tiblisi), was found dead. A postmortem is being conducted to determine the cause of her death.

Ramesh, currently serving as the general secretary of the Congress party, called the argument that these deaths are normal occurrences “complete nonsense”. He cited international cheetah experts who have discredited this claim. Ramesh further blamed the deaths on the abandonment of science and transparency and the overemphasis on one man’s vanity and desperate need for self-glory.

At present, 14 cheetahs – seven males, six females, and a female cub – are kept in enclosures in Kuno National Park. Their health is regularly monitored by Kuno wildlife veterinarians and a Namibian expert.
