Agency(Chandipur): In a significant advancement for India’s defence capabilities, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) achieved a milestone with the successful execution of flight trials for the Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missile. These trials took place on the 28th and 29th of February 2024, launched from a portable ground-based launcher situated at the Integrated Test Range in Chandipur, near the Odisha coastline. The tests targeted high-speed unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), simulating various interception conditions. Each test resulted in the effective engagement and neutralization of the targets, fulfilling all defined mission goals.

The VSHORADS missile system, a Man Portable Air Defence System (MANPAD), was conceptualized, designed, and developed within the country by the Research Centre Imarat (RCI), in partnership with other laboratories under the DRDO umbrella and collaboration with Indian industrial entities. The missile is distinguished by its incorporation of several cutting-edge technologies, such as a compact Reaction Control System (RCS) and sophisticated integrated avionics, all of which were validated in the course of the flight tests. Powered by a dual-thrust solid propulsion system, the missile is engineered to counteract low-flying threats at close distances. Its design, including the launching mechanism, is specifically tailored for maximal portability without compromising performance.

The successful trials were observed by a delegation comprising Indian Army officials, senior scientists from various DRDO labs, and representatives from the participating industrial partners.

In response to this achievement, Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh extended his congratulations to the DRDO, the Indian Army, and all industry contributors for the successful developmental trials, highlighting the significance of integrating modern technologies into the missile to bolster the technological prowess of the Armed Forces.

The Secretary of Defence R&D and the Chairman of the DRDO also expressed their commendations to the entire team responsible for the missile’s design and development, marking a significant step forward in India’s defence innovation and self-reliance efforts.

This initiative not only showcases the indigenous capabilities in advanced missile technology but also strengthens the national defence infrastructure, promising enhanced security against aerial threats.
