Construction of Four Fast Patrol Vessels for Indian Coast Guard at Goa Shipyard

New Delhi (Agency): On August 25, 2023, a significant milestone in India’s defense sector was marked with the laying of the keel for four Fast Patrol vessels (FPVs) at Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) by Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane. The event was a clear demonstration of India’s commitment to strengthening its naval capabilities and promoting indigenous shipbuilding.

The FPVs, designed by GSL, will be medium-range weapon-fitted surface vessels, boasting a length of 51.43 meters and a breadth of 8 meters. Propelled by twin engines, the ships will reach a maximum speed of 27 knots and have a displacement of approximately 320 tons. These vessels are designed to operate in rough sea conditions.

The Defence Secretary applauded Goa Shipyard’s efforts in achieving this milestone and emphasized the importance of nurturing and developing India’s shipbuilding industry, which has a rich legacy. He highlighted the scale of indigenization in collaboration with the Indian industry, making these FPVs state-of-the-art and technologically advanced.

During his speech, Aramane acknowledged the increasingly competitive nature of the industry and urged GSL to be more efficient to retain its competitive edge. He emphasized that efficiency and competitiveness would be key in maintaining a cutting-edge position in the market.

DGCG Rakesh Pal congratulated the Goa Shipyard’s team for their dedicated efforts and expressed confidence that GSL would continue to strive for perfection and achieve higher goals in the future.

Alongside the keel-laying ceremony, the Defence Secretary also inaugurated GSL Integrated Stores Complex, marking another step in GSL’s ongoing development.

The event was attended by notable officials, including Director General of the Indian Coast Guard Prakash Pal, Chairman and Managing Director of GSL Brajesh Kumar Upadhyay, and other Indian Coast Guard officials.

The construction of these Fast Patrol Vessels is indicative of India’s dedication to strengthening its maritime security and promoting domestic manufacturing. It aligns with the country’s broader strategy to enhance its naval capabilities while emphasizing self-reliance and collaboration within the Indian industry.
