Congress Criticizes Modi Over Economic Inequality

"Wealth gap ignored by Modi," claims Congress

Agency(New Delhi):On Tuesday, the Congress party vehemently criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent statements and his government’s economic policies. Congress leaders accused him of failing to address the substantial wealth disparity in India and the fiscal pressures placed on the poorer segments of society.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh took to social media platform X to express his disapproval, stating, “The Prime Minister will never reveal that from 2012 to 2021, over 40% of the country’s wealth has been acquired by just 1% of the population. Additionally, around 64% of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) collected nationwide is contributed by the poor, the lower middle classes, and the middle classes.”

Ramesh further criticized the government’s privatization efforts, claiming that the majority of public assets sold in the past decade were acquired by only a couple of companies. He argued that this trend towards economic monopolization is contributing to rising inflation rates, highlighting that “21 billionaires now possess more wealth than 70 crore of India’s populace.”

He advocated for a more equitable and sustainable economic model, asserting that the INDIA bloc is poised to deliver on these fronts with policies focused on inclusive and ecologically friendly growth.

Echoing Ramesh’s sentiments, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also condemned Modi’s rhetoric, accusing him of using divisive strategies for electoral gain rather than focusing on the country’s advancement. “Modi’s approach has consistently been to create divisions, focusing on issues like Hindu-Muslim relations and caste to garner votes, rather than addressing the real needs of India,” Kharge remarked.

These statements come in the midst of heightened political tension between Congress and the BJP, as both parties articulate their visions for India’s future economic and social trajectories.
