Agency (Guwahati): The four-day-long annual Ambubachi Mela at the historic Kamakhya temple in Guwahati will commence on June 22. The Ambubachi Mela is a significant Hindu fair celebrating the annual menstruation cycle of goddess Maa Kamakhya. The Kamakhya temple, situated atop Nilachal Hills, is one of the 51 Shaktipeeths in India.

The Assam government and Kamakhya Temple Management Committee have made extensive arrangements for the event. Kabindra Prasad Sarma, the Doloi (head priest) of the temple, mentioned that the state government and district administration are supporting the event with security, transportation, food, and other necessities.

“This year’s Ambubachi Mela’s Pravritti will begin at 8:45 am on June 22, after which the main door of the temple will be closed for three days and three nights. The Nivritti ceremony will take place on June 26, and the temple will reopen that morning. All rituals and puja will be performed after Nivritti,” Sarma explained.

Sarma added, “Last year, around 25 lakh devotees visited the temple during the Ambubachi Mela, and we hope the number will increase this year.” To ensure security, 500 CCTVs will be installed along the roadsides and other key locations. Currently, 300 CCTVs have already been installed within the temple premises, and preparations are ongoing.

“Last week, a meeting was held with the Chief Secretary of the state government. We have also formed a special committee for the Ambubachi Mela,” Sarma said. Vivek Kumar Shukla, a devotee from Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, mentioned that people from across the country come to seek blessings from Goddess Kamakhya and find peace at this historical place. “The annual Ambubachi Mela will start from June 22 this year, and it is a historical place,” Shukla added.
