New Delhi; Indian authorities have placed the India-Nepal border on alert following large-scale protests in Nepal, sources confirmed on Monday. The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), India’s border guarding force, has ramped up surveillance and implemented strict checks to prevent any spillover of unrest into Indian territory.

Officials described the alert as “preventive in nature” and stated that the situation is currently under control. “The SSB is maintaining heightened vigilance along the border, and additional deployments have been made at several outposts,” a senior official told.

The alert follows massive demonstrations in Kathmandu, where thousands of Nepali youth stormed the Parliament building in protest against a nationwide social media shutdown and alleged government corruption. The Nepalese government had blocked access to several social media platforms, including Facebook, citing concerns over hate speech, fake news, and online fraud allegedly spread through fake user accounts.

The open India-Nepal border, which spans approximately 1,751 kilometers across five Indian states — Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and Sikkim — allows unrestricted movement for citizens of both countries. While this fosters close cultural and economic ties, it also necessitates heightened security during times of political unrest.

Historically, India has issued similar alerts during internal disturbances in Nepal, such as the 2015 Madhesi protests, which disrupted trade and cross-border movement.

The SSB, one of India’s Central Armed Police Forces with over 90,000 personnel, is tasked with securing the sensitive border and is also deployed in counter-insurgency and internal security operations when needed. The force continues to monitor the evolving situation in Nepal closely and is providing regular updates to the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Authorities have assured that coordination with local administrations along the border remains strong to ensure public safety while maintaining normal cross-border movement wherever possible.
