Male, Maldives: Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his visit to the Maldives on Friday, emphasized India’s longstanding friendship with the island nation, stating, “For India, it is always friendship first.” Speaking at the 60th Independence Day celebrations of the Maldives, where he was invited as the Guest of Honour, PM Modi reiterated India’s unwavering commitment to supporting its closest maritime neighbour.
Highlighting the Maldives’ significance in India’s Neighbourhood First and SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) policies, PM Modi said India has consistently stood by the Maldives, particularly during times of crisis such as natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic.
“India is proud to be the Maldives’ most trusted friend. Whether it’s ensuring essential supplies, responding to emergencies, or assisting in post-pandemic economic recovery, we have always acted together. For us, it is always friendship first,” he remarked.
PM Modi also extended heartfelt congratulations to President Mohamed Muizzu and the people of the Maldives on their diamond jubilee of independence. He highlighted the deep-rooted ties between the two countries, stating, “This year also marks 60 years of diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives. But our connection goes beyond that — older than history and as deep as the Indian Ocean.”
As a symbol of cultural and historical connection, both leaders jointly released commemorative postage stamps featuring traditional boats from both nations.
“These stamps reflect our shared heritage. They signify that we are not just neighbours, but true friends,” PM Modi added.
In his address, President Muizzu praised India’s continued support across various sectors. He noted that the Greater Male Connectivity Project, backed by India, will be a long-lasting symbol of the countries’ enduring partnership.
President Muizzu also thanked India for:
Supplying 72 vehicles to the Maldives National Defence Force,
Supporting the 4,000-unit housing project, with the latest handover of 3,300 units, and
Playing a pivotal role in the Maldivian health sector.
Tourism cooperation was another focus area, with both leaders exploring ways to enhance connectivity, including the launch of direct flights between the two nations to boost travel and economic ties.
“India remains a key tourism partner, and we are committed to expanding this sector through improved cooperation and connectivity,” said President Muizzu.
The visit marks a significant milestone in the bilateral relationship, reaffirming mutual respect, cooperation, and a shared vision for regional prosperity.
