Itanagar – The Indian Air Force (IAF) on Monday successfully carried out a high-risk Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operation in Arunachal Pradesh’s flood-affected Lower Dibang Valley, airlifting 14 people stranded by the rising waters of the Bomjir River.
The rescue, conducted using an IAF Mi-17 helicopter, followed an urgent request from the state governments of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, according to Defence PRO Guwahati.
In a separate incident, seven people lost their lives on Saturday in a landslide along National Highway 13 between Bana village and Seppa in the Seppa West Assembly constituency. Local MLA Mama Natung offered condolences and urged the public to avoid night travel during the monsoon.
“It is very painful to hear about the tragic loss of seven lives… My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families,” Natung said in a post on social media platform X.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also addressed the deteriorating weather conditions in the Northeast, speaking with the Chief Ministers of Assam, Manipur, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh. He assured them of full central assistance in managing the impact of the ongoing heavy rainfall.
“The Modi government stands like a rock in support of the people of the Northeast,” Shah posted on X.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued continued weather alerts for Arunachal Pradesh through June 6. The forecast includes very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning, with a multi-hazard weather warning issued for several northeastern states earlier this week.
