Banarasi Sarees Celebrate Ram Temple Consecration

Ram Mandir Theme Boosts Banarasi Saree Demand

Aryavarth(Varanasi): In anticipation of the upcoming Ram temple consecration ceremony, Banarasi saree weavers in Varanasi are experiencing a surge in orders for sarees themed on ‘Ram Mandir’. These sarees, known for their exquisite craftsmanship, are being specially designed with various patterns, including motifs of the Ram Mandir on the pallu (end piece), designs depicting the life of Lord Ram from his childhood to the defeat of Ravana, and ‘Shree Ram’ inscriptions along the borders.

This fashion trend aligns with the nearing completion of the first phase of the Ram temple, a project that gained momentum following the Supreme Court’s historic 2019 verdict. The verdict resolved a long-standing temple-mosque dispute and paved the way for the temple’s construction at the disputed site. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to participate in the consecration ceremony on January 22.

Artisans across India are expressing their enthusiasm for the temple opening through their unique creations. Anisur Rahman, a weaver from Mubarakpur in Varanasi, shared the community’s excitement and anticipation for the grand event. He noted that while sarees with historical motifs have always been popular, those themed on the Ram temple hold a special sentiment.

Rahman detailed the types of sarees being crafted for this occasion. One type features the Ram temple inscription on the pallu, predominantly in red and yellow hues with golden shades. Another variety, available in multiple colors, showcases a border with ‘Shree Ram’ inscribed throughout. The most detailed sarees depict various phases of Lord Ram’s life, including his triumph over Ravana.

Madan, another weaver from the Peeli Kothi area, highlighted the high demand for sarees depicting ‘Ram Darbar’ on the pallu. These sarees have also attracted international interest, with orders coming from the United States. Prices for these sarees range from Rs 7,000 to Rs 1 lakh, reflecting their intricate craftsmanship and cultural significance.

Banarasi silk weaves, renowned for their exceptional workmanship and rich narratives, mirror the culture of the land through their royal brocades, motifs, and vibrant colors. Over the years, Banarasi weaves have absorbed various cultural influences, developing a unique design language that is celebrated widely. These sarees not only represent the artistic heritage of Varanasi but also resonate with the current cultural moment marked by the historic consecration of the Ram temple.

During his visit to Ayodhya in December 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the global anticipation for the Ram temple consecration ceremony and encouraged people to celebrate the day by lighting special diyas named ‘Shri Ram Jyoti’ in their homes.
