Mandi: At least 10 people have died, and 34 others are reported missing in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district after a series of cloudbursts and flash floods struck the region over the past 32 hours, according to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC).
In its latest monsoon situation report released at 8:00 AM on July 2, the SEOC confirmed that the state has been hit by 16 cloudbursts and three flash floods, with Mandi emerging as the worst-affected district.
Describing Mandi as the “epicentre” of the disaster, the report noted extensive destruction across the Thunag, Karsog, and Gohar subdivisions. In Siyanj (Gohar), two houses were swept away, leaving nine people missing—two of whom have been confirmed dead.
In the Kutti Bypass area of Karsog, another cloudburst claimed two lives and left two others missing, while seven people were rescued. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams are conducting intensive search and rescue operations across the affected regions.
Elsewhere, in Balha village of Hamirpur district, flash floods stranded several families near the Vyas River. Police successfully rescued 51 people, including 30 migrant labourers and 21 local residents.
Relief efforts are ongoing, with emergency shelters set up and essential supplies such as food, blankets, and tents being distributed. In Dharampur’s Triyambla (Serthi) village, 17 families received assistance after suffering losses to livestock and property.
The SEOC stated, “Search and rescue efforts are in full swing, with NDRF and SDRF teams actively deployed across Mandi.”
Authorities are closely monitoring rainfall and river levels, particularly at Jyuni Khad, which is currently flowing above the danger mark. With further rain expected, residents in high-risk areas have been urged to remain vigilant and comply with evacuation orders from local authorities.
