New Delhi: Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, held a high-level meeting with Brazil’s Vice President and Minister of Development, Industry, Trade and Services, Geraldo Alckmin, during the latter’s visit to India. The discussions centered on strengthening the growing energy and trade partnership between the two countries.
Sharing details of the meeting on social media, Puri said the talks reflected the deepening energy cooperation between India and Brazil under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“I was pleased to meet His Excellency Geraldo Alckmin. Our discussions focused on the expanding energy ties—from robust bilateral trade in hydrocarbons and long-term crude supply contracts with Petrobras, to Indian investments worth over USD 3.5 billion in Brazil’s upstream sector. Brazil has become India’s largest investment destination in the Americas,” said Puri.
The leaders explored opportunities for collaboration in oil and gas exploration and production, including India’s potential role in Brazil’s upcoming offshore projects. They also discussed mutual interests in deepwater and ultra-deepwater energy ventures.
Clean energy transition was another key focus area. Both sides reviewed ongoing efforts to boost cooperation in biofuels and ethanol blending. As founding members of the Global Biofuels Alliance, India and Brazil reaffirmed their commitment to promoting sustainable biofuels on a global scale.
Reflecting on his personal connection to the country, Puri noted his past tenure as India’s Ambassador to Brazil (2006–2008), and said it was a pleasure to renew ties with a country that holds special significance for him—particularly in the energy sector.
The meeting underscored the growing strength of the India-Brazil relationship and their shared intent to deepen cooperation in both traditional and emerging areas of energy and trade.
