Gandhinagar (Gujarat): Gujarat on Monday underscored the growing importance of modern fishing harbours as drivers of economic, ecological, and social progress, stating that the state’s push for resilient and inclusive “Blue Harbours” will strengthen national food security and help India compete more effectively in global seafood markets.
According to the Gujarat Chief Minister’s Office, the Government of India has launched a major initiative to enhance coastal infrastructure through a strategic partnership between the Department of Fisheries (DoF), the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying (MoFAHD), and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations.
A newly signed Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP) will support the development of world-class Blue Harbours at Jakhau (Gujarat), Vanakbara (Diu), and Karaikal (Puducherry)—creating a national model for smart, sustainable, and inclusive fisheries development.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), the Centre has approved INR 452.32 crore for Smart and Integrated Fishing Infrastructure.
Jakhau Harbour, located in Kutch district and managed by the Commissioner of Fisheries, remains one of Gujarat’s largest and most strategic fishing hubs. It serves thousands of fishermen from Kutch and neighbouring regions and plays a critical role in fish landing, vessel movement, post-harvest work, and coastal security. The harbour has now been included in the government’s Blue Revolution programme to upgrade fisheries infrastructure and increase operational capacity.
Looking ahead, Gujarat will host the second edition of the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference (VGRC) in Rajkot in January 2026. The event will focus heavily on the Kutch and Saurashtra regions, recognised for their strong fisheries sector and strategically important harbour networks that support marine livelihoods, logistics, and blue-economy initiatives.
VGRC 2026 is expected to bring together policymakers, industry leaders, and experts to discuss emerging technologies, global best practices, and investment potential across the maritime and fisheries sectors—reaffirming Gujarat’s leadership in advancing India’s Blue Economy through innovation and sustainable development.
