New Delhi: Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Priyanka Chaturvedi has written to Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw, expressing serious concern over the alleged misuse of artificial intelligence tools on social media platforms to harass and target women.
In her letter, Chaturvedi highlighted a disturbing trend on social media platform X, where fake accounts are allegedly being used to upload women’s photographs and run prompts on AI tools to generate objectionable and demeaning content. She said the practice not only violates women’s privacy but also amounts to unauthorised and unethical use of their images.
Calling it a “gross misuse” of AI technology, the MP said such actions are unacceptable and raised alarm over the role of AI tools in enabling this behaviour. She stated that the alleged misuse goes beyond fake accounts and also targets women who share their own photographs online.
Chaturvedi described the trend as a serious breach of women’s right to privacy and dignity, adding that it could amount to criminal conduct. She urged the Centre to take urgent and decisive steps to hold social media platforms accountable and to ensure strong safeguards are built into AI-driven tools to protect women online.
In her letter, she said India cannot remain a silent spectator while women are publicly and digitally humiliated under the guise of innovation and creativity. She also pointed out that similar unchecked patterns are emerging across other major technology platforms, further endangering women’s safety in digital spaces.
Emphasising the need for immediate government intervention, Chaturvedi said women must not be silenced or forced out of online platforms due to such practices. While reiterating that India welcomes artificial intelligence and its benefits, she made it clear that the country will not tolerate the spread of demeaning and harmful content targeting women.
She expressed hope that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology would take up the issue with major tech companies and ensure stronger enforcement to protect women’s rights and dignity in the digital ecosystem.
