Mathura (Uttar Pradesh), December 16:
At least four people were killed and 25 others injured after a major collision involving multiple vehicles led to several buses catching fire on the Delhi–Agra (Yamuna) Expressway in Mathura district during the early hours of Tuesday, officials said.

The accident occurred near Milestone 127 on the Agra–Noida lane of the expressway amid extremely low visibility caused by dense fog. According to police, the crash initially involved three cars, after which seven buses—one state transport bus and six sleeper buses—rammed into them, triggering a massive fire that engulfed the vehicles.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mathura, Shlok Kumar, said rescue operations were swiftly launched. “Due to poor visibility, multiple vehicles collided, resulting in a fire. Seven buses and three cars were involved. Four people have died so far, while 25 injured passengers have been admitted to hospitals. None of them are in critical condition,” he said.

SP Mathura Rural, Suresh Chandra Rawat, added that 11 fire tenders were deployed to control the blaze and rescue those trapped inside the buses. “All the buses caught fire, but the flames have now been brought under control. Four bodies have been recovered so far, and rescue work is still underway,” he said.

An eyewitness travelling in one of the buses described the chaos following the collision. “I was asleep when the accident happened around 4 am. The bus was full, and suddenly several buses caught fire,” the passenger said.

Panic gripped passengers as flames spread, with many rushing to escape the burning vehicles. Injured victims were immediately shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The incident comes amid severe weather conditions in Uttar Pradesh, where several cities, including Agra, were covered in thick fog and smog on Monday morning. Visibility dropped sharply, posing serious risks to motorists, with locals reporting that even nearby vehicles were difficult to see on the roads.
