Chandigarh: In a significant development in the suicide case of Haryana’s Assistant Director General of Police (ADGP) Y. Puran Kumar, the deceased officer’s family has handed over his laptop to the Chandigarh Police, following a directive from the court.

The court had instructed that the entire handover process be recorded to ensure the integrity and security of digital evidence. It also emphasized that the laptop’s data must be preserved and the transfer process thoroughly documented.

ADGP Y. Puran Kumar died by suicide on October 7 at his residence in Sector 11, Chandigarh. With the family’s consent, a post-mortem examination was conducted at PGI on October 15. Investigators are now focusing on digital evidence, particularly the contents of the laptop and Kumar’s mobile phone. Authorities plan to examine fingerprints, emails, and the alleged suicide note to identify potential recipients or links to the incident.

Earlier, Kumar’s wife, senior IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar, accused Haryana Director General of Police Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor and Rohtak Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarnia of mental harassment, caste-based discrimination, and sustained humiliation against her husband. She has submitted a formal complaint demanding that an FIR be registered against the two officers. According to her statement, her husband had left behind a suicide note detailing the alleged harassment.

In a related case, ASI Sandeep Lathar—who had previously accused ADGP Y. Puran Kumar and his family of corruption—was found dead under suspicious circumstances in Rohtak on October 14. His cremation was held in Julana, Jind district, on Thursday. Haryana Minister Shruti Chaudhary, who attended the last rites, assured the family that the state government would ensure justice. Lathar’s daughter described her father’s death as a “sacrifice in the fight against corruption.”

Both cases are now under close scrutiny as the police analyze digital and forensic evidence to uncover the truth behind the incidents.
