The Aryavarth Express Gurugram (Haryana) [India], March 23: Former Indian cricketer Nikhil Chopra praised the Men in Blue for their historic ICC T20 World Cup victory, calling it the “best phase of Indian white-ball cricket.” He also expressed confidence that the team’s well-rounded lineup could help India claim the 50-over World Cup in 2027, to be co-hosted by South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe.
Earlier this month, India became the first team to defend the T20 World Cup title, win it as hosts, and secure a record-breaking third title. Since 2023, Team India has enjoyed a strong run in limited-overs cricket. After a 10-match winning streak in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup at home, their only loss came in the final against Australia. Under Rohit Sharma’s leadership, India remained unbeaten in the 2024 T20 World Cup and ICC Champions Trophy, and lost just one match under Suryakumar Yadav’s captaincy in the recent home T20WC.
Nikhil Chopra credited India’s success to a strong domestic structure, including state-run T20 leagues feeding into the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Indian Premier League.
“You hit the nail on the head. This is India’s best phase in white-ball cricket. It hasn’t happened overnight. In the IPL, young players become stars and compete alongside some of the world’s best. State boards running their own T20 leagues before the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy ensures players are ready. By the time they play IPL, they are prepared. Just look at Priyansh Arya (Punjab Kings batter playing for Delhi in domestic cricket),” Chopra said.
He also stressed the importance of converting starts into match-winning performances, noting the seamless transitions and processes in Indian cricket.
Chopra expressed hope that Team India would win the 2027 50-over World Cup, highlighting the squad’s depth. “We were runners-up last time and had one bad game. Now, we are a very complete side with so many match winners in our batting unit. Our bowling line-up is equally strong—Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, spinners, and left-arm pace. Hopefully, everything clicks at the right time,” he said.
On the upcoming IPL, beginning March 28 with defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru facing Sunrisers Hyderabad, Chopra added, “IPL is a different beast altogether. Predictability goes out the window. We are going to enjoy that spectacle.”
